Relenza (Zanamivir)
What is Relenza (Zanamivir) used for? Relenza (Zanamivir) is a flu medication used to treat symptoms such as nasal congestion, coughing, fatigue, sore throat, or headaches. The medication prevents the reproduction of virus cells allowing the immune system to fight the infection naturally. Even though it may also be used to prevent infection caused by contact with those suffering from influenza, it is not a replacement for a vaccine. Your physician may prescribe it for other unlisted conditions, as well. How should I use Relenza (Zanamivir)? Follow your physician's instructions while using Relenza (Zanamivir) to get the safest and most effective results. Two inhalations are usually administered each day for five days when treating a flu infection. When preventing the flu, two inhalations may be taken once a day for a period of ten to twenty eight days. The best dosage and frequency of application will be determined by your physician based on your contact with the infection, your current health condition, and the severity of your symptoms. To administer the doses, load the blisters into the inhaler, remove the cap, press the button to puncture a blister, and inhale deeply with your mouth firmly sealed on the mouthpiece. If another dosage is required, wait at least two hours between each application. Ask your pharmacist or physician if you have any questions about using the inhaler or medication to ensure the correct usage. What are the side effects of Relenza (Zanamivir)? Side effects that may occur while using Relenza (Zanamivir) include:
Immediately inform your physician if you experience trouble breathing, faintness, signs of an allergic reaction, or any other severe symptoms occur. These may require emergency medical attention or changes to your regimen to prevent further health complications from occurring. Please Note Do not begin using Relenza (Zanamivir) if you are lactose intolerant, allergic to any ingredients, or if the patient is under the age of five. Also inform your physician if you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) or asthma as these conditions may cause complications during treatment requiring reduced dosages. Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Relenza (Zanamivir). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated. As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products. Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have an allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing. |
