Motivyst (Canagliflozin)
What is Motivyst (Canagliflozin) used for? Motivyst (Canagliflozin) - 300mg (10 Tablets) is an oral hypoglycemic medication, a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It has been discovered that patients suffering from diabetes often display elevated renal reabsorption of glucose, which can lead to the persistent increase in the glucose levels. SGLT2, expressed in the proximal renal tubules, is responsible for the major part of the glucose reabsorption from the tubules lumens. Motivyst (Canagliflozin) is a SGLT2 inhibitor. By inhibiting SGLT2, Motivyst (Canagliflozin) reduces filtered glucose reabsorption and decreases renal threshold for glucose, in this way increasing renal elimination of glucose and lowering blood glucose levels with insulin-independent mechanism in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes. The increase in renal glucose elimination by means of SGLT2 inhibition also leads to osmotic diuresis, and its diuretic action lowers systolic blood pressure; the increase in renal glucose elimination leads to the loss of calories and, as a result, weight loss. Motivyst (Canagliflozin) is used to treat type 2 diabetes in adult patients as a monotherapy medication or as part of the combination therapy with other hypoglycemic agents, including insulin. How should I use Motivyst (Canagliflozin)? Motivyst (Canagliflozin) is available in 100 and 300 mg film-coated tablets, taken orally, onca a day, preferably before breakfast. The standard recommended dose is usually either 100 or 300 mg per day. What are the side effects of Motivyst (Canagliflozin)? The use of Motivyst (Canagliflozin), as it is the case with other medications, may cause adverse side effects, affecting different systems in the body:
Please Note Using Motivyst (Canagliflozin) in patients with type 1 diabetes has not been studied; therefore it is contraindicated to this category of patients. Motivyst (Canagliflozin) is also contraindicated in patients suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis, terminal stage of the chronic kidney disease or in patients undergoing dialysis, as long as such treatment will not be effective in the above medical cases. Other Motivyst (Canagliflozin) contraindications include hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or other components of the medication, severe kidney failure, severe liver failure, pregnancy, breast-feeding, and age under 18 years. |
